The playground can be a lonely place. But with Buddy Benches, a new project from the Meriden Rotary Club, we can ensure that no child has to sit alone during recess.

What is a Buddy Bench?

While Buddy Benches are a nice place to sit – they’re sturdy, weatherproof and engraved with the school name – they’re also much more than that. When a child sits on the Buddy Bench, it’s a signal that they’re looking for a friend – and he or she will be approached by classmates shortly.

Buddy Benches encourage:

  • Kindness
  • Friendship
  • Inclusiveness

About Meriden’s Buddy Benches

Buddy Benches are being installed on the playgrounds at each of Meriden’s 8 elementary schools, with the majority of their funding provided by the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement.

The concept of the Buddy Bench is introduced with a school-wide assembly, and members of the K-Kids Club take the lead, acting as ambassabors for the Buddy Bench.

“So far, the kids have really taken ownership of the idea – they see it as their responsibility.”

—Ty Bongiovanni, Rotary Club President
